Windows, is a proprietary graphics operating system developed by Microsoft. It includes a number of many features and is designed to run on a variety of hardware platforms. Microsoft developed Windows in the late 1970s and is still one of the most popular operating systems. The latest version of Windows is version 11. The Windows 10 operating system is the most popular desktop operating system in the world.

Alternatives to Windows are Linux distributions. The Linux family is large and caters for many different needs, they are open source and Unix-like. The kernel, or Linux core, was released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Currently the best known versions are Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Elementary OS, Fedora, Gentoo Linux, Kali Linux, Suse, Red Hat and many more. Android for smartphones is also a derivation of Linux

The most used software after the operating systems are the Office packages, both Microsoft and Open Source. You can consider OEM licenses that are sold in combination with computers, they tie them to the hardware but are much cheaper than the Retail versions. If you make a subscription to Microsoft's Office 365 for example, you'll be happy to know that you can use the software on both desktop and mobile devices, both laptops and smartphones. You can choose all the versions on the market such as the Home edition, the one for students, or if you are a professional and need additional features the Professional edition of the suite, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Pubblisher, One Notes, One Drive, Teams and more. The most popular Open Source alternatives currently are LibreOffice and OpenOffice
